The Growing Coyote Problem in Louisiana

The Louisiana Wildlife Rehabilitators Association and the Humane Society of Louisiana are co-hosting a meeting Monday on the growing problem of coyotes.. The meeting will be held at Harahan City Hall at 5:30 p.m, Monday, July 11, 2011. There have several reports of Coyotes capturing family dogs out of fenced backyards.  There have siteings of Coyotes in City Park.

The Cornell University Co-Operative is doing a study of the behaviours of coyotes. Some things to know.

  • Don’t leave food, even bird seed out in the back yard it attracts coyotes.
  • Don’t leave small dogs in the back yard, a coyotes will jump over a four foot fence, grab a small dog, and jump back over the fence
  • Don’t walk at night without a long stick or perhaps an umbrella in case you are approached by a coyote.
